Peggy Browning Fund Summer Fellowship

The Peggy Browning Summer Fellowship Program is comprised of a 10-week fellowship during the summer months at labor-related organizations around the country.  In 2019, Peggy Browning awarded funded summer fellowships to 87 law students, one of which was our own Elyssa Cisluycis. 

The Summer Fellowship Program provides stipends to 1st and 2nd year law students who dedicate this time to advancing the cause of workers’ rights.  Peggy Browning routinely collaborates with over 150 participating law schools and selected mentor organizations nationwide. Summer Fellowship stipends will be a minimum of $6,000 per student for the ten-week employment period.  In many cases, mentor organizations will supplement the stipend.
There are various firms and organizations around the country that participate in this program, so even if you are not a native of the NYC area, you can still participate. 

The application deadline is Friday, January 17, 2020. Applicants must submit a resume, cover letter, a supplemental essay outlining your interest and involvement in labor and employment law-related courses and student organizations, and, for some firms, a writing sample.

AFL-CIO Legal Department Fellowship

PLACEMENT’S MISSION AND WORK: The Legal Department of the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (“AFL-CIO”) is offering a one-year fellowship beginning in September 2020. The fellowship offers an excellent opportunity for recent law school graduates to work with experienced union-side lawyers on a wide variety of issues.

STATEMENT OF DUTIES: The AFL-CIO Fellow will work with lawyers in the AFL-CIO Legal Department and with other union lawyers around the country on a wide variety of matters. The Fellow will assist experienced lawyers working on cases and regulatory matters that affect the labor movement and the rights of workers. The AFL-CIO’s litigation caseload includes cases in the U.S. Supreme Court and the U.S. Courts of Appeals and before the NLRB and a small number of state appellate courts. In addition, the AFL-CIO Legal Department frequently presents the views of the labor movement on federal regulatory initiatives affecting workers. Whenever possible, the Fellow will be given the opportunity to participate in meetings with union lawyers and to attend oral arguments. The AFL-CIO Fellow will also participate in Lawyers Coordinating Committee activities, including preparation for attorney conferences, outreach to new labor lawyers and law students, and regular opportunities to attend LCC meetings and conferences.

The fellowship salary is in the range of $65,000 to $70,000 depending on experience. Benefits include excellent medical and dental insurance plus paid vacation.

Recent law graduates, judicial clerks, and third year law students are welcome to apply. Applicants should also have a commitment to workers’ rights and a desire to practice union-side labor law. Levy Ratner, P.C. – Summer 2020 Law Clerk – New York

Levy Ratner, P.C., a NYC firm representing individuals in employment-related matters, unions in the private and public sectors, and employee benefit funds seeks full-time, paid law clerks (35 hours per week) for the summer. Position entails research and writing on a variety of legal topics, as well as the potential for client contact, depending on assignment. Excellent research and writing skills and ability to work under short deadlines are essential. Relevant labor/employment law classes and experience and/or demonstrated commitment to the labor movement and protecting workers’ rights preferred.

U.S. Department of Labor, Office of the Solicitor, Civil Rights and Labor-Management Division

PLACEMENT’S MISSION AND WORK: The Office of the Solicitor’s (SOL) mission is to meet the legal service demands of the entire Department of Labor (Department). As the Secretary of Labor and other Department officials seek to accomplish the Department’s overall mission and to further specific priorities, SOL provides legal advice regarding how to achieve those goals. In doing so, SOL ensures that the Nation’s labor laws are forcefully and fairly applied to protect the Nation’s workers. SOL’s Civil Rights and Labor-Management Division (CRLM) provides a broad range of legal services, including advice, litigation, and assistance in rule-making, to several components of the Department, including the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs; Office of Labor-Management Standards; Civil Rights Center; Office of Disability Employment Policy; Women’s Bureau; Center for Faith-Based & Neighborhood Partnerships; and Office of Apprenticeship. STATEMENT OF DUTIES: This is an unpaid internship. When law school credit is available, CRLM will work with the student’s school to satisfy credit requirements. Students who can commit to a full-time schedule (35-40 hours/week) are preferred. The law student intern will assist CRLM in providing legal services to the client agencies listed above. Duties will include significant legal research and writing in connection with advice, litigation and/or rulemaking projects for client agencies, such as drafting memoranda, analyses, and briefs, and may include attending meetings with
the client agencies and other SOL divisions as appropriate.

DESCRIBE THE QUALIFICATIONS: Excellent research and writing skills; a demonstrated interest in civil rights, labor and employment issues; and a strong academic record. Prior relevant courses or work experience preferred but not required.

9/11 Victim Compensation Fund Department – Part Time

The jobs will consist of speaking to 9/11 victims and first responders, drafting Victim Impact Statements, computing economic and non-economic damages, responding to Dept of Justice VCF inquiries, and completion of final applications under the supervision of an attorney. This is a great opportunity for students who want client interaction and are ready to roll up their sleeves. This is an opportunity for law students for up to 15 – 25 hours per week. Ronkonkoma, Suffolk County. Pay is $10/hr. The jobs could convert to FT over the summer or into internships.
